Mise-en-Scène
2020-2023
Mise-en-Scène is the fourth project and it is also the 2023 Beach Museum of Art Gift Print.
Over a period of two years, we engaged in a long-distance exchange exploring ideas of arrangement. We made individual prints and objects and mailed them to each other, inspiring us to investigate, contemplate and experiment with staging. Three exchanges occurred and the number of objects grew, prompting each of us to rearrange and reconsider the scenes we created. A hand-made byōbu (traditional Japanese screen) furthers the exploration of space and narrative. Our evolving arrangements were documented on Instagram (@woodpaperbox).
In creating the work, we tried a range of hand-pulled print processes including mokuhanga, lithography, letterpress, inkjet printing and relief printing.
The project was supported by the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
Special thanks to Aileen June Wang, Curator at the Beach Museum of Art, for her support throughout the process and Britt Stadig Studio in Nashville, Tennessee for making the clamshell boxes.
This is an edition of ten with six Artist Proofs and one handling copy.
